Leading Together: Strengthening Governance Through Role Clarity, Collaborative Practice and Shared Purpose

The Conscious School Governance and Leadership Program is a professional learning program for independent schools that supports Principals, Chairs and Boards to work more effectively, with a particular focus on the Chair–Principal relationship as a key driver of school culture, strategic alignment and governance effectiveness.

The Challenge
Independent schools face distinct governance pressures:
– Role boundaries between governance and operations are often unclear, especially in schools with evolving structures or high board turnover.
– Compliance and risk obligations are increasing, and can dominate board agendas.
– Chair–Principal relationships are shaped by personality, context and constitutional arrangements, but rarely supported through professional learning.
– Isolation is common: governance decisions are often made without shared language, peer support, or a clear understanding of how governance connects to educational purpose.
– Governance structures vary widely across the sector, and many schools operate without a shared understanding of how governance supports school culture and strategy.

The Solution
The Conscious School Governance and Leadership Program supports independent schools to strengthen governance practice through structured dialogue, practical tools, and evidence-informed reflection.
It begins with a no-cost introductory session for Board Chairs, Principals and other governance leaders, together or separately, facilitated by experienced leadership and governance advisors. This session opens space to:
– Reflect on the nature of governance relationships in your school.
– Explore common sources of tension and misalignment.
– Consider how governance practices shape school culture and strategic direction.
– Learn about the program and its relevance to your school’s context.

The Conscious School Governance and Leadership program draws on findings from recent governance research on successful leadership of governance in independent school, which highlights the importance of relational trust, shared purpose and context-aware leadership in successful governance, with the Chair–Principal relationship identified as a central influence on broader school outcomes.

How It Works
The program runs over three months, with:
– Two online sessions workshops per month, facilitated by experienced governance educators
– Structured dialogue and case-based learning
– Access to governance research, frameworks, planning tools and checklists
– Peer-sharing in a confidential, professionally facilitated space

Topics include:
– Clarifying roles and responsibilities across governance and leadership
– Navigating governance and operations
– Building trust and accountability in governance relationships
– Understanding governance as a practice, not just a structure
– Working with your school’s constitution and governance arrangements

Following the group sessions, schools can opt into individualised mentoring and coaching for Board Chairs, Principals or other governance leaders. This supports:
– Strategic thinking in context

– Strengthening communication and decision-making practices
