Assess the sustainability of strategic planning |
A well-established school sought to review the sustainability of its strategic process, focusing on whether its long-term thinking was sufficiently strategic. We worked with the Chair and senior executive team to evaluate strategic thinking across various leadership levels. The process led to an enhanced strategic direction and a refined succession plan.
Challenges
The school leadership questioned whether their approach was sufficiently strategic. Breakdowns were identified at the board, subcommittee and executive levels, highlighting the need for a more cohesive approach.
Strategy
Through individual consultations with board members and senior leaders, we identified key areas for improvement. The findings were compiled into a white paper, which became the foundation for a one-day strategic workshop.
Key areas included:
- Reviewing board and executive succession
- Balancing short- and long-term planning
- Establishing a subcommittee to guide long-term strategy
Action
During the workshop, leadership discussed the white paper’s findings and developed clear action points, including:
- A new subcommittee for long-term strategic planning
- Updated succession procedures for leadership
- Realignment of strategic goals toward long-term sustainability
Outcomes
The process resulted in:
- Clear succession plans and strengthened leadership focus
- A subcommittee driving the school’s long-term strategy
- Strategic clarity at all leadership levels, ensuring future sustainability
These changes have set the school on a strong path for future success.
